Potato Varieties: Yellow-skinned Varieties

Abeille - Tubers are "round; flaky yellow skin; moderately numerous shallow eyes, evenly distributed; eyebrows slightly prominent; yellow flesh.... High yielding variety; moderately resistant to hollow heart, brown heart, vascular net necrosis; high dry matter content; long dormancy period (9 months)." Primary use: Fresh market.

Abnaki - Tubers are "roundish, flattened at the stem-end; smooth light creamy buff skin, sometimes slightly netted; shallow eyes, same color as the skin; white flesh.... High yielding of attractive appearance; widely adapted; hollow heart can develop especially in oversized tubers if the variety is subjected to wide growth-rate fluctuations; stores well. High total solids." Released in 1970 by USDA, New York and Maine. Primary use: Fresh market, boiling, baking; also suitable for chipping and French frying. See also: Akeley et alia, Am. AC Brador - Tubers are "oblong; smooth yellow skin; shallow eyes; light yellow flesh.... High yielding variety; early tuber set; extremely high resistance to late blight; susceptible to hollow heart. AC Chaleur - Tubers are "round to oval, slightly blocky; smooth buff coloured skin; moderately shallow eyes; white flesh.... Medium to high yielding variety; not susceptible to hollow hart. AC Dubuc - Tubers are "long, sometimes slightly curved; smooth buff skin; few shallow eyes, predominantly apical; non prominent eyebrows; white flesh.... High yielding variety; well adapted to Québec climatic conditions; good storability; medium long dormancy period; high specific gravity."

AC Maple Gold (WIS75-30) - Tubers are "oval, uniform; smooth light yellow skin; shallow eyes, evenly distributed; eyebrows not prominent; medium yellow flesh.... High yielding variety with medium number of tubers per plant. This variety should be grown with an in-row spacing of 30 cm. High specific gravity. Medium dormancy period. Good storability." AC Novachip - Tubers are "oval to oblong, slightly flattened (small tubers are round); smooth buff coloured skin; shallow eyes, except medium deep at the bud end; white flesh.... Medium high yielding variety; medium dormancy period; medium specific gravity. Tubers tend to be large; in row spacing should be 20 cm to avoid oversized tubers." Released in 1991 by Ag Canada NB. AC Ptarmigan (F76080) - Tubers are "oval; smooth buff skin; shallow eyes, eyebrows not prominent; cream coloured flesh.... High yielding variety of attractive appearance; very uniform tuber size and shape; early tuber set; medium number of tubers per plant; medium specific gravity." AC Sunbury (F80054) - Tubers are "oval; smooth light yellow skin; shallow eyes, intermediate in number, predominantly apical; non prominent eyebrows; light yellow flesh.... High yielding variety; medium number of tubers per plant; short dormancy period; high dry matter content." Adora - Tubers are "oblong; light yellow, rather smooth skin; medium shallow eyes, evenly distributed; pale yellow flesh.... High yielding variety with good tuber uniformity; few tubers per plant. Adriana - Tubers are "Elongated oblong, shallow eyes, yellow smooth to medium skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Agata - Tubers are "oval to oblong; light yellow smooth skin; shallow eyes, intermediate in number, evenly distributed; slightly prominent eyebrows; yellow flesh.... High yielding variety. Agria - "Oval, regular, very shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh." "Very high yield variety. Large to very large tubers, attractive appearance, only slightly susceptible to internal bruising. Fairly high dry matter content. Long dormancy." Primary use: "relatively firm to floury flesh; free from discolouration after cooking; excellent for baking, good for boiling and frying." Aida - Tubers are "Long oval, shallow eyes, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh."

Ajiba - Tubers are "round to oval, yellow, medium rough skin; yellowish-white flesh; rather shallow eyes." Primary use: Fresh market.

Alaska - Tubers are "long oval, not very deep eyes, yellow skin, yellowish-white flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Albas - Yellow-skinned, oval tubers with white flesh. Primary use: Starch production.

Albatros - Medium large to large, oval, yellow skin, shallow to medium eyes, light yellow flesh. Multipurpose variety with good drought tolerance. See also: European Cultivated Potato Database.

Allegany - "Allegany was released by the New York State Experiment Station in 1990.... Tubers are round in overall shape and in cross section with shallow lateral eyes and deep apical eyes. Skin color is buff and skin texture ranges from smooth to slightly netted depending on soils and environment.... The high yielding ability in fall production areas is this variety's primary advantage. Allegany is not adapted to summer and winter production regions due to its late maturity. The variety has resistance to golden nematode, early blight, and Verticillium wilt and is moderately resistant to pitted scab and has some general resistance to late blight. Tubers can be marketed as tablestock and chip stock. The long dormancy of tubers is an advantage in storage. Allure - Yellow-skinned, round tuber with white flesh. Primary use: Boiling, French frying.

Almera - Long-oval, yellow-skinned tubers with white flesh. Primary use: Fresh market.

Alowa - Tubers are "Long oval, not very deep eyes, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Alpha - Tubers are "round to oval, large, uniform; fairly rough yellow skin; moderately shallow eyes; pale yellow flesh.... High yielding variety; tubers are usually quite uniform and have good resistance to internal bruising. Very late variety, seed should be prepared to advance maturity in Eastern Canada. Amandine - Tubers are "Long oval, regular, eyes shallow to very shallow, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Aminca - Tubers are "Oval, regular, shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Early to very early variety, productive, with a dry matter content fairly satisfactory for a variety of this early maturity." Primary use: Fresh market. See also: European Cultivated Potato Database .

Amyla - Tubers are "Short oval, medium to deep eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh." Primary use: Starch production.

Anais - Tubers are "Oval, eyes surface, moderately sunken, yellow skin, yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Andes Gold – "Cream colored skin and pale yellow flesh; this potato has a very creamy texture. Outstanding as a baked potato." Listed as an Heirloom variety in the 2008 Oregon Potato Seed Cerification Standards (pdf).

Andover - Tubers are "round; rough, buff colored skin; few shallow eyes, predominantly apical; medium prominent eyebrows; white flesh.... High yielding variety; susceptible to drought, heat stress and air pollution. Medium dry matter content. Good storability quality; medium dormancy period (6 months). Apollo - Tubers are "Oval, regular, very shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Early variety with early tuber crop maturity and regular shaped tubers, with good appearance, and well suited for the production of earlies." Primary use: Fresh market.

Arcade - Long-oval, yellow-skinned tubers with yellow flesh. Primary use: Chipping.

Arielle - Oval, yellow-skinned tubers with pale yellow flesh. Primary use: Fresh market.

Arinda - Long-oval, yellow-skinned tubers with pale yellow flesh. Primary use: Fresh market.

Armada - Large, oval, yellow-skinned tubers with pale yellow flesh. Primary use: Fresh market.

Arnova - Large, long-oval, yellow-skinned tubers with pale yellow flesh. Primary use: Fresh market.

Arran Consul - Tubers are "oval, blunt, indented at the stem end; pale yellow skin; medium-deep to deep eyes; creamy white flesh.... Medium to high yielding, long dormancy period, stores very well." Primary use: Fresh market.

Atlantic - "Atlantic is a medium- to late-maturing potato released in 1976 by Webb et al. USDA - Beltsville, Maryland. It is primarily a chipping potato noted for its light chip color. It also is considered a good baker; has wide adaptability to a diverse range of irrigated growing conditions." Tubers are "round, fairly deep eyes, yellow skin, white flesh." In Canada considered a white-skinned variety: Tubers are "oval to round, smooth; lightly netted to heavily scaled white skin; shallow white eyes; white flesh." PAA considers this a russet variety: "Tubers are oval to round with light to-heavy scaly netted skin, moderately shallow eyes, and white flesh." Primary use: Fresh market, chipping. Atlas - Tubers are "Oval, fairly regular, not very deep to medium eyes, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh.... Relatively late variety, productive, but which appears susceptible to the leaf roll virus, with very large tubers, very few in number and rather slightly susceptible to desprouting." Primary use: Fresh market.

Augsburg Gold - "tasty skin, attractive, mealy yellow flesh." Waxy potatoes, good for steaming or frying. See also: European Cultivated Potato Database.

Aurora - Tubers are "round, yellow, rough skin; white flesh; rather deep eyes." Primary use: Starch production.

Austrian Crescent - "10-inch, fingerling tubers weighing up to 18 ounces with tan skin and deep, waxy, yellow flesh."

Axelle - Tubers are "Elongated oblong, shallow eyes, yellow smooth to medium skin, yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Bailla - Tubers are "Long, not very deep eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Bake-King - "R. Plaisted and Peterson release the Bake-King variety, a cross of Merrimack and Green Mountain" (Tucker's Chronology). Bake-King is a parent of Shepody.

Baltica - "Baltica is an medium early, very high yielding fresh market potato variety with high numbers of short oval tubers per plant. The tubers have a smooth yellow skin and yellow flesh color. Baltica has long storage capabilities and when cooked or peeled has a high resistance to discoloration. Baltica is a German variety developed and owned by Solana."

Banana - "Late season. Small, fingerling tubers with buff-yellow skin and light-yellow, waxy-textured flesh. Stores well. Resistant to scab and somewhat resistant to late bright." Also known as Banana Fingerling and Russian Banana.

Baraka - Very large, yellow-skinned tubers with pale yellow flesh. Primary use: French frying and chipping.

Bea - Tubers are "Long oval, very regular, very shallow eyes, clear yellow skin, pale yellow flesh.... Variety giving tubers with excellent presentation, due to their shape, regularity and eyes. It requires great care to be taken in the storing and pregermination of the seed potatoes." Primary use: Fresh market.

Belana - Early yellow variety, with smooth skin and a dark yellow flesh. HIgh yield of large oval tubers. Primary use: fresh market. Belle de Fontenay - Tubers are "Claviform, very regular, very shallow eyes, yellow skin, dark yellow flesh.... Variety whose low productivity and susceptibility to certain diseases are largely compensated by an extreme earliness and a very good culinary quality." Primary use: Fresh market. See also: Cornell.

Belleisle - Tubers are "oblong to ovoid; medium size; slightly netted buff skin; shallow light buff eyes; white flesh.... High yielding variety of attractive appearance; performs well under organic production practices; highly resistant to bruising and skinning; good storability; high specific gravity."

Benno Vrizo - Large, yellow-skinned, long to oval tubers with yellow flesh.

Berber - Large, yellow-skinned, oval tubers with yellow flesh.

Bernadette - Tubers are "Oblong, eyes on surface, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh." See also: Scottish Agricultural Science Agency, which considers this a white-skinned cultivar.

Bintje - "large, regular, long, oval, thick; smooth pale yellow skin; shallow eyes; light yellow flesh; on exposure to light, tubers become green with dark purple at the eyes." Tubers size early to very early across the Canadian Prairies; vines maturity is midseason to late; smooth conformation if harvested early but if left to plant maturity, tubers frequently become oversized and rough with growth cracks or hollow heart. Weak to medium storability; low to medium specific gravity." Primary uses: boiling.

Carola - "Oblong tubers with yellow skin and moist, firm, yellow flesh. Good storage. Highly resistant to scab but susceptible to fusarium seed-piece decay. Inconsistent yields depending on growing conditions. Medium-spreading plant." "Not many come close to the exquisite flavor and moist creamy texture of its yellow flesh. Both market farmers and home gardeners like the satiny gold skin and large tubers. High yielding variety, tubers are relatively free of internal defects such as net necrosis. Initially released for early French fry processing directly out of the field. Medium specific gravity. Centaure - Tubers are "Short oval to oval, yellow skin, yellow flesh." Primary use: Starch production.

Ceres - Tubers are "Short oval, fairly inserted eyes, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Starch production.

Cherokee - Tubers are "short-elliptical to round; slightly flaky ivory yellow skin; shallow eyes; white flesh. High yielding variety; widely adapted, particularly to mineral and muck soils; good resistance to skinning and bruising; good storability; high total solids." Primary uses: boiling, baking, and chipping.

Chipie - Tubers are "Rounded, shallow to moderately sunken eyes, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market, French frying.

Cicero - Tubers are "oval, yellow, medium rough skin; pale yellow flesh; shallow eyes."

Cilena - Tubers are "long-oval; yellow, smooth skin; yellow flesh; shallow eyes."

Clauster - Tubers are "Oval, regular, shallow eyes, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh.... Very productive rustic variety, giving large regular tubers with shallow eyes, of good keeping quality, but with low dry matter content." Primary use: Fresh market.

Cobbler - "Round tubers with buff skin and firm, dry, white flesh. For short-term storage. Medium resistance to scab. Medium-sized plants." An old variety, first reported in 1876, and one of the first to be grown in the Pacific Northwest. Also known as Irish Cobbler. See also: PAA.

Comtesse - Tubers are "Elongated oblong, shallow eyes, yellow smooth to medium skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Concurrent - Tubers are " oval; smooth light yellow skin; few shallow eyes, evenly distributed; not prominent eyebrows; light yellow flesh.... High to very high yielding variety; medium number of tubers per plant, uniform in shape and in grading; good resistance to hollow heart and to drought; rather good resistance to internal bruising; medium to good storability; short to medium dormancy period; low dry matter." Crispin - "Longer shelf-life and more attractive appearance than Yukon Gold. A more flavorful yellow-flesh potato with a firm texture."

Crosty - Tubers are " Elongated, eyes on surface to fairly deep, yellow skin, pale yellow to white flesh."

Cupids - Tubers are "round to oval; white skin, slight flaky russetting in some soils; shallow eyes; pale yellow flesh.... High yielding variety of attractive appearance; tubers are uniform in size; relatively resistant to damage during harvesting; moderately resistant to greening; good storability; high dry matter." Primary uses: boiling and home French frying.

Cycloon - Tubers are "long-oval; yellow, medium rough skin; fairly yellow flesh; shallow eyes."

Cynthia - Tubers are "Oval, regular, shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Very productive variety showing a good earliness of tuber development, with very large tubers of good culinary quality, but having a certain susceptibility to diseases." Primary use: Fresh market.

Cyrano - Medium to large oval tubers with yellow skin and shallow eyes; light yellow, waxy flesh. "Excellent appearance and a good dry matter make Cyrano suitable for a select or exclusive table potato clientele." See also: HZPC's European site.

Daifla - Tubers are "Oblong, shallow to moderately deep eyes, yellow smooth to medium skin, white flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Daisy - Tubers are "Oval, not very deep eyes, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Daisy Gold - "Mid-season. Yellow, flaky, moist flesh. Resistant to nematodes."

Dakota Pearl - Tubers are "round; smooth light yellow skin; medium deep eyes, predominantly apical; slightly prominent eyebrows; cream colored flesh.... Medium to high yielding variety that produce uniformly round tubers of attractive appearance. It has shown very good resistance to blackspot bruises during trials. Excellent chipping quality even after long-term storage at 6 °C." Primary uses: boiling, baking, chipping. See also: North Dakota.

Dali - Tubers are "long-oval, yellow, smooth skin; fairly yellow flesh; very shallow eyes." "Average susceptibility to rust spots, fairly resistant to hollow heart, fairly resistant to black spots.... Delice - Tubers are "Oval to long oval, regular, shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Early productive variety, showing a good earliness of tuber development, which appears appropriate for the production of earlies." Primary use: Fresh market.

Delikat - "Delikat is early maturing with oval yellow fleshed large tubers with shallow eyes that's suitable for fresh markets and chipping and dehydrated products. Tuber initiation occurs early and the vine is medium to tall sized with a rapid development. Its storablility is very good and it has resistances to potato wart, leaf roll virus, PVY, PVA. It is susceptible to late blight, rhizoctonia and blackleg. Delikat is a private variety of Norika."

Denali - Tubers are " oval to oblong, uniform shape; smooth and tough buff coloured skin; shallow eyes, evenly distributed; short eyebrows; white flesh.... High yielding variety of attractive appearance; tolerant to heat and frost; moderately resistant to hollow heart and other internal defects; not affected by tuber greening because tuber set deeper than many varieties; good storability; medium dormancy period; very high specific gravity." Primary uses: chipping while fresh.

Diamant - Tubers are "oval, yellow, smooth to medium smooth skin; pale yellow flesh; rather shallow eyes."

Ditta - Tubers are "long-oval, dark yellow, medium rough skin; yellow flesh to fairly yellow flesh; shallow eyes." "Fairly resistant to rust spots and to hollow heart, fairly resistant to black spots.... Holds shape very well when cooked, table-use group A, slight blackening after cooking." Doré - Tubers are "round, yellow, rough skin; yellow flesh; shallow eyes." Primary use: Fresh market.

Draga - Tubers are "long-oval, yellow, smooth skin; yellowish-white flesh; moderately deep eyes." Primary use: Fresh market.

Duchesse - Tubers are "Oblong to elongated oblong, very regular, eyes on surface, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Slightly earlier variety than Bintje, productive, with early tuber formation, giving very regular tubers with some dry matter content." Primary use: Fresh market.

Dundrod - Tubers are " round to oval; slightly rough light yellow skin; medium deep eyes, intermediate in number, predominantly apical; white flesh.... Medium yielding variety; moderately resistant to internal and external bruising; good storability; medium specific gravity." Primary uses: boiling.

The Scottish Agricultural Science Agency considers this a white-skinned, oval-round pale yellow fleshed tuber intended for the French fry processing market.

Ilona - "Ilona is an early, very high yielding fresh market potato variety with big tuber size, yellow skin and flesh color. Ilona is a German variety developed and owned by Solana.... Early ware variety with big, round oval tuber shape, yellow skin, light yellow flesh colour. Very well suited for cultivation in hot climates but responds well to irrigation." Molli - Molli is very early maturing with round oval yellow fleshed large tubers with shallow eyes that's suitable for fresh markets. Its storablility is very good and it has resistances to potato wart, PVY, PVA. It is susceptible to leaf roll virus, late blight, rhizoctonia and blackleg. Molli is a private variety of Norika. Nipigon - Tubers are "oblong to ovoid, medium-sized; smooth to slightly flaked buff skin; eyes shallow, medium-deep at the bud end, faintly purple; white flesh.... High to very high yielding variety; adapted to the muck soils of northern Ontario where it sizes early, has a minimum of hollow heart and does not bruise easily. Hollow heart and bruising are more common when grown in southern Ontario and eastern Canada (except on muck soils). Susceptible to internal heat necrosis when grown in hot soils, resistant to drought, good for the table stock market, unsuitable for processing. Stores very well. Ontario - "Selected from a cross between Richter Jubel x USDA S44537. Released in 1946 by USDA and Cornell.... Tubers are oblong with a creamy buff smooth skin. Eyes are shallow except at apical end which is sometimes sunken. Flesh color is white.... Ontario is highly scab resistant and has some resistance to late blight and Fusarium wilt. It has some tolerance to harvest bruising."

Opaline - Tubers are "Elongated oblong, shallow eyes, yellow smooth to medium skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Operle - Tubers are "Rounded, not very deep eyes with moderately sunken, yellow skin, pale yellow flesh." Primary use: Fresh market.

Ostara - Tubers are "Short oval with oval, regular, shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Early productive variety, with good earliness of tuber development. The skin becomes rough and scaly with maturity." Primary use: Fresh market. Introduced in 1961 in Europe; parent of registered Canadian varieties Fambo and Obelix.

Ottena - Tubers are "oval, yellow, smooth to medium smooth skin; pale yellow flesh; rather shallow eyes." Primary use: Fresh market, boiling, chipping.

Ozette - "Very-late season heirloom. Fingerling tubers with bumpy, buff skin and waxy, white flesh. Good storage. High resistance to scab." There's some evidence to indicate that this variety came directly up the West Coast during the "voyages of discovery" in the 16th century; see also Haida. Also known as Anna Cheeka's Ozette. Pamina - Tubers are "Oval, regular, very shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Very vigorous and productive medium-late variety, with large regular tubers and quite yellow skin, but appearing fairly susceptible to damages and blight." Primary use: Fresh market.

Peanut - "Late-season. Fingerling tubers with tan, netted skin and waxy, dense, yellow flesh. Good storage. High resistance to scab. Also known as 'Swedish Peanut'." "Dry, golden-fleshed, heirloom, fingerling potato from Sweden produces teardrop-shaped tubers. Also known as Mandel. Perfect baked or roasted." Also known as Butterfinger.

Penelope - Tubers are "Oval to long oval, regular, very shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Rather early, vigorous variety, very productive, giving large tubers with a good culinary quality. It is fairly susceptible to parasites and desprouting." Primary use: Fresh market.

Picasso - Tubers are "oval, yellow and red eyes, medium rough skin; pale yellow flesh; rather shallow eyes."

Pike - "Pike resulted from a cross between Allegany x Atlantic. It was tested as NYE55-35 and released by Cornell University and the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station in 1996.... Tubers of Pike are medium sized, spherical with shallow lateral eyes and moderately deep apical eyes. The skin is buff colored and slightly netted. Tuber dormancy is considerably longer than Monona or Atlantic. The major strengths of Pike are good chip processing characteristics and excellent common scab resistance." Pungo - Tubers are "elliptical to elliptical round; flaky dark creamy buff skin; medium-deep eyes, same colour as the skin; white flesh.... High yielding, well suited for medium-textured well drained mineral soils, close spacing between plants and reduced fertilization will reduce the appearance of oversized and rough tubers, some resistance to drought, short dormancy period. Ramos - Tubers are "oval to long-oval, yellow skin; fairly yellow flesh to pale yellow flesh; shallow eyes." Primary use: Fresh market, chipping.

Ratte - Tubers are "Reniform, rather regular, rather shallow eyes, yellow skin, yellow flesh.... Due to its quality, this variety lends itself well to certain dishes: salads, ragout, etc. This compensates for a low productivity." Primary use: Fresh market. Note: This is probably the same variety as La Ratte (see above) which is also known for its poor yeilds and culinary desirability.
